A Letter to the Community

Dear readers, friends, and fellow travelers — this letter is an accounting. Not a financial accounting, though we will get to that. This is an accounting of where we have been, where we are, and where we believe we are headed.

A Better World was founded on the conviction that the barriers between the spiritual, the political, and the communal are largely artificial — that the work of inner transformation and the work of outer transformation cannot be separated. We have tried to hold that conviction in everything we publish.

We have not always gotten it right. We have published pieces that missed the mark, made editorial decisions we later questioned, and sometimes let the urgency of the moment crowd out the spaciousness we believe good thinking requires. We own those failures, and we try to learn from them.

What we can say with confidence is this: the project continues to matter. The questions we are trying to ask — about how to live well in an unjust world, about the relationship between spiritual practice and political action, about what it means to be in genuine community — are more pressing than ever. We are grateful to be asking them with you.
